Ways of speaking Romani are diverse. Our project aims to preserve this diversity while introducing Romani in schools as one of the languages of learning, but without attempting to standardise it. It is spoken in schools the way it is spoken every day by its speakers all over Europe. Our approach is based on translanguaging, which we see as a practical theory of language (Li 2018). It allows us to describe the Roma’s bilingual practices and to formulate the language-pedagogical principles which support the presence of these practices in schools. We believe that translanguaging can be a part of contemporary approaches to learning, such as inclusive education, because it has the potential to shape teachers’ way of working and thinking. A translanguaging stance can be adopted by all teachers, teacher trainees, and other professionals working with bi- and multilinguals, regardless of whether they themselves speak Romani or not, or of the number of other languages their students speak. Our activities involved professional and non-professional researchers, such as local Roma parents. The participatory aspects of our research have broadened our understanding of translanguaging: instead of a narrowly defined concept of education, it generates potential to re-think and organise cultural and social life as a whole. Our results are presented in a video repository consisting of short films which showcase translanguaging classroom moments with commentaries, and in a multi-authored volume partly based on the classroom scenes shown in the films.

A romanit Európában milliók beszélik otthonaikban, azonban az iskolában sehol nem tanulhatnak ezen a nyelven a gyerekek.
