Kant preached misogyny and the exclusion of women from the professional chair for over 30 years. How does this fit with his reputation as a major Enlightenment political philosopher whose 'metaphysics of morals' insists on abstracting from our social existence? Although this problem is much discussed, prevailing solutions to this apparent contradiction are inadequate. By appreciating more fully how Kant's 'dark' anthropology occasions his 'bright' metaphysics, we can understand the underlying coherence of his philosophy, at the cost of his reputation as progressive moral philosopher.
